Frequently Asked Questions

How do container cranes work?

Container cranes are specifically designed to handle the loading and unloading of containers onto ships. They employ a lengthy horizontal arm known as a 'boom' that extends over the container vessel. Knuckle boom container cranes remote control based options let you work from a safe distance or right where the action is, providing an unobstructed view.

What crane moves containers?

A Hiab knuckle boom crane excels at moving containers, storage units, and mobile offices.

What is a containers forklift?

A truck mounted container forklift is designed to lift and handle heavy loaded containers.

What is the best way to lift a shipping container?

Choosing the appropriate equipment for lifting a shipping container depends on several factors including the weight of the container, the location and terrain, the height and distance at which the container needs to be lifted or moved, and the available resources.

Use a Knuckle Boom Crane With:

Heavy Loads: Knuckle boom cranes are suited for lifting heavy containers as they have a high lifting capacity.

Reach and Flexibility: They provide a high degree of flexibility and can reach over obstacles, making them ideal for tight or obstructed spaces.

Vertical and Horizontal Lifting: They are capable of both vertical and horizontal lifting, which can be crucial depending on the jobsite conditions.

Use a Truck-Mounted Forklift With:

Lighter Loads: Generally, MOFFETT truck-mounted forklifts are suitable for lighter loads compared to knuckle boom cranes.

Unloading and Short-Distance Transport: They are excellent for unloading containers from a truck and moving them a short distance to a nearby location.

Fast Operations: If the operation requires quick unloading and placement with less setup time, a truck-mounted forklift can be a good choice.

Use a Hooklift With:

Quick Swapping of Bodies: Hooklifts are ideal when there’s a need to quickly swap bodies on a single chassis, such as switching between a flatbed, dump body, or a container.

Easy Loading/Unloading: They allow for easy and fast loading and unloading of containers onto a truck chassis.

Lower Height Operations: They are more suited for operations where height might be a constraint as they operate at a lower height compared to cranes.

HiConnect Remote Connectivity

HIAB HiConnect™ is a web-based dashboard that displays insights on equipment usage, location, time in operation, idle time, and productivity level. By enabling new insights, it helps you to further increase efficiency, productivity, and safety. HiConnect is the latest technology in terms of connectivity capabilities. Being able to remotely access data is key to maximizing your business with facts instead of assumptions. HiConnect maintains constant contact with all units, giving fleet managers the ability to stop unsafe behavior and usage before an incident happens. With the ability to view service history and plan upcoming services, your fleet has minimum downtime and increases daily efficiencies.

Image

HiPro Control System

The HiPro control system with Overload Protection (OLP) is standard on all K-Cranes and brings an unprecedented level of safety to operations without reducing performance. When approaching an overload condition, the crane gives an audible and visual signal at 90% and will stop all radius increasing functions once full capacity has been reached. Automatic Speed Control (ASC) reduces dynamic loading by progressively reducing the speed of the crane when the capacity is between 80% and 100%, preventing operators from performing unsafe, abrupt movements.
Image

Variable Stability Limit

HIAB’s Variable Stability Limit system (VSL) monitors the truck’s stability by registering the extension of stabilizers and monitoring the pressures at each leg to determine the maximum safe capacity of the crane, allowing for higher capacities in situations where the legs are not able to be fully extended. VSL and VSL Plus are available on all Hiab K-HiPro cranes (285, 425 and 505) with VSL Plus available for the 505, which compensates for the weight of the load on the truck, offering even greater lifting capacities, increasing the efficiency of any business.

Image

Load Stability System

Load Stability System (LSS-V) provides smoother, more precise vertical boom motions. If an operator performs a hard stop while raising or lowering a load, the LSS-V system controls boom movement, minimizing the bouncing of the boom and load, while preventing load damage and unnecessary stress on the crane’s components. This feature works in the background to smooth out boom functions allowing for easier placement of the load, making deliveries faster and more efficient. By controlling boom movement and minimizing the bounce of the boom, the structural stress is reduced, thus increasing the expected service life of the crane.
Image

Crane Tip Control

Crane Tip Control (CTC) is an optional feature available for the 285 and 425 cranes. It allows the crane’s controls to be controlled by three levers – the horizontal extension from the truck, the vertical lift, and the rotation of the crane. CTC provides a simplified operation, reducing training time when onboarding new operators, while allowing operators to perform complex techniques safely and efficiently.
Image

Semi Automatic Folding

Semi Automatic Folding (SAF) simplifies the stowing process reducing it to a single-lever operation, protecting the crane and the truck from damage. It allows a single lever operation to fold and unfold the crane, while activating just one lever, which greatly simplifies this frequent routine operating task.
Image

CombiDrive3 Remote Control

The HIAB CombiDrive3 remote control increases efficiency by giving the operator freedom of movement to use the best possible position to view the load. It comes standard with a 100%, 70%, or 50% speed switch. This feature allows the operator to easily change the speed of the crane - especially useful when adjusting heavy loads at long outreaches. The HIAB CombiDrive3 remote control is reliable and worry-free industrial component designed to last the life of the crane.

Remote Ground Mount

Remote Ground Mount (RGM) allows the operator to completely mount or dismount the MOFFETT without the need to climb onto or off of an elevated forklift. With up to a 25' range, the wireless remote control allows the operator to stand away from the machine and traffic during the mounting and dismounting process. This means staying out of the line of traffic or other jobsite hazards while giving optimal visibility during the mounting/dismounting process.

Image

Seat Belt Alarm

The seat belt drive-interlock system now has additional alarm options to improve operator safety. The machine is now fitted with alarms, which trigger if the seat belt is not fastened and/or if the side door is not closed in the correct order. The seat presence alarm system is designed to help ensure operators wear the seat belt properly by invoking a 15 second delay if the seatbelt is fastened before the operator enters the seat.
Image

Full Single-Side Off-Loading

Full capacity, single-side offloading is achieved using MOFFETT's Pantograph and patented Lift Assist System™ that allows the forks to reach completely across the deck of the truck or trailer and lift or place a full capacity load, while still maintaining the tilt and side shift functionality of the mast. This eliminates the need to move the truck and trailer from one side of the road to the other to complete the offloading process.
Image

Four Way Travel

Four way steering allows the forklift to operate safely in 4 directions: forward and back as well as left and right. This allows the operator to transport long loads in a much smaller space by carrying the load parallel to travel, eliminating the need to find alternate routes due to obstructions.
